From strategy formulation and planning to human resource management, from cash management to advice on company start ups, from cost reduction exercises to project management and pretty much everything in between.

A Chartered Management Accountant, Ray spent the early part of his career gaining experience, working in the accounts departments of large multinational companies such as Westinghouse Brake and Signal Company, Rank Hovis McDougal Limited and Roussel Laboratories Limited.

After seven years and a number of management positions with Roussel – a French pharmaceutical company –the last in the role of Corporate Planning and Accounting Manager at the company’s London head office, Ray joined the Williams Lea Group – a City based financial printer in London, as Finance Director.

His time in the City coincided with the boom and bust years of the mid to late eighties and he experienced the very real highs and lows of that period, managing the finances of a company that saw its sales go through the roof before collapsing as the financial markets crashed. Ray was extensively involved, as a member of the Company’s three man Strategy Board, with seeing through a large redundancy and cost saving programme that ultimately enabled the Company to re-group and go forward, once the markets returned to normality.

The early 1990’s saw Ray involved in a three man management buy-in of Scotland’s largest financial printing company, based in Edinburgh. As well as using their own funds, the team was backed by two venture capital firms and The Bank of Scotland. Ray took on the role of Financial Director and was responsible for preparing and presenting all the financial plans associated with the buy-in, which secured the funding to enable the venture to successfully complete.

Within two years, the Company had opened a new operation in Glasgow and had bought an existing financial printer back in London with Ray playing a major part in the acquisition and merging of the new company into the Edinburgh parent company.

Wishing to do his own thing, Ray eventually sold his shares to his partners and bought a commercial printing company back in the South of England.

Ray grew the company and moved into the financial printing market again. This attracted the attention of other printing companies and Ray eventually sold the business to one of them and settled down to early retirement.

The attractions of retirement, however, soon faded and Ray saw an opportunity to start a new business involving the local market gardening community in Bromham, where he lived. He formed Bromham Growers Limited and invited local market gardeners to become shareholders in the new company. The company took fresh produce from their farms, washed it, packaged it, sold and distributed it, initially to Bristol, Southampton and Cardiff wholesale fruit and vegetable markets.

Over the next fourteen years, in his role as Managing Director, with particular emphasis on Sales and Marketing, Ray oversaw the growth of the company to become a leading player in the fresh produce industry, supplying at some time, every supermarket on the high street, the UK’s leading food processing companies and just about every wholesale market in the UK, with produce from all over the world.

He attained SALSA , a food industry recognised quality accreditation for the company and personally holds HACCP and food safety and hygiene qualifications, as well as holding a Certificate of Professional Competence for Vehicle Operators.

In 2010, due to the increasingly difficult trading conditions being experienced in the fresh produce industry and uncertainty over the future of the supply base, Ray and his fellow Directors decided to voluntarily cease trading and realise the assets in the company.

Later that same year, Ray started Cargill Enterprises Limited – a one stop consultancy business set up to make his experience gained over many years at the sharp edge of business in both large and small companies available to the wider business community.
